Ski Patrol

patrolWillamette Pass Ski Patrol is a member of the National Ski Patrol (NSP) system. This volunteer organization serves outdoor recreationalists two seasons of the year. In winter, the Patrol fulfills its traditional function working to keep the mountain safe for skiers and snowboarders and aiding those who suffer a medical problem or are injured while at the mountain. In summer, the Patrol is on duty offering the same services during the times the Oregon Skyway Gondola is in operation carrying sightseers, hikers, mountain bikers, and disc golfers to the top of Eagle Peak.

All patrollers are members of NSP and skilled in first aid, having passed an extensive class in Outdoor Emergency Care, similar to an EMT basic level, and annually refreshing these skills.

Patrollers are certified in one or more of three categories:

  • Alpine Patrollers have the required OEC first aid training and in addition are expected to be highly skilled in their skiing or boarding. They train annually in skills required to transport injured skiers or boarders using rescue toboggans. Weekend Alpine Patrollers volunteer their services. Weekday Alpine Patrollers are paid employees of Willamette Pass Resort and must go through the normal hiring process along with the steps volunteers take for joining the Patrol.
  • Auxiliary Patrollers have at least the same first aid training as Alpine Patrollers, but are not trained to transport patients. Often Auxiliaries are medically trained beyond the basic OEC level.
  • Summer Patrollers, like all patrollers, have at least OEC first aid training, and are available to administer to and transport summer visitors in need.  Mountain biking skills are not required, but are very desirable for Summer Patrollers.

The patrol actively recruits new patrollers each year. If you think you might be interested, please visit the Willamette Pass Ski Patrol's website and click the 'Join' tab. This includes the steps and requirements needed to become a patroller.
